Cobre raises A$90M to fast-track its Chilean copper play

What's the deal? Cobre Limited (ASX:CBE) has completed a A$90 million placement to accelerate production and exploration at its Sierra Atacama copper project in Chile. The raise was cornerstoned by the company's two major shareholders, Tribeca Investment PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Strata Investment HoldingsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → Plc, which led with A$20 million and A$8 million respectively.

The details: Cobre issued roughly 300 million new shares at $0.30 each across two tranches. Tranche 1 raises about A$72 million using existing placement capacity; Tranche 2, worth about A$18 million, needs shareholder approval at an extraordinary general meeting expected in late August or early September 2026.

What's the money for? Proceeds, combined with existing cash, will fund a A$17 million payment to lift Cobre's ownership in Sierra Atacama, A$26 million of debt repayment, and A$29 million for a plant upgrade and development. The remainder covers exploration, its Botswana projects, and working capital.

What's the endgame? Cobre wants to become a mid-tier copper producer. "This $90m capital raise marks a transformational milestone for Cobre as the Company moves toward becoming a mid-tier Copper producer," said executive chairman Martin Holland.

Why now? The raise follows Cobre's July 7 move to increase its ownership in Sierra Atacama, which it calls one of the most promising emerging copper districts in Chile. The board is also participating for A$200,000, subject to shareholder approval.

The signal: The placement sits in roughly the 95th percentile by size among post-IPO equity rounds in Australian energy, underscoring investor appetite for copper as Cobre bets on scaling production in the metal's traditional heartland.
