Calibre raises $3.3M to build AI for the auditing industry

What's the deal? Calibre, a startup building AI infrastructure for the testing, inspection, and certification (TIC) industry, has raised $3.3M in a pre-seed round led by Vicus Ventures and CIV. I2BF, 9 Yards Capital, Jigeum, and angel investors including Nikesh Arora also participated.

The company is building AI tools to speed up the certification process — which currently takes three to six months — by automating document review, report writing, and standards cross-referencing for auditors and inspectors.

Alongside the funding, Calibre announced AuditorOS, its first product built for independent auditors, set to launch publicly in June.

Why now? The TIC industry is worth over $200B but runs on a remarkably low-tech stack. Auditors spend most of their time on manual paperwork rather than the expert judgement calls they were trained for. Meanwhile, the workforce is shrinking: training takes years, retirements are accelerating, and fewer people are entering the field.

AI has reached a point where it can handle the document-heavy grunt work that bogs auditors down — creating a window for startups like Calibre to modernise an industry that underpins virtually all global commerce.

What could go wrong? Certification exists because trust matters. Aircraft components, banking systems, and food supply chains all depend on human sign-off. Introducing AI into that chain raises obvious questions about reliability and accountability. If an AI-assisted audit misses something critical, the consequences could be severe — and the reputational damage to both Calibre and its TIC partners could be existential.

Selling into large, risk-averse enterprise TIC bodies also means long sales cycles and heavy customisation requirements, which could strain a pre-seed company's resources.

The signal: Calibre's raise reflects a broader trend of AI startups targeting industries that are massive but historically underserved by technology. The TIC sector — sprawling, document-heavy, and facing a workforce crunch — fits the profile perfectly.

It also signals investor appetite for vertical AI plays that go beyond generic productivity tools. Calibre isn't building a chatbot; it's deploying bespoke AI agents engineered for specific standards, workflows, and organisational patterns. That kind of deep vertical integration is increasingly where the value lies as horizontal AI tools commoditise.
