GrandBridge backs Kitchener solar firm VCT Group in strategic investment

What's the deal? VCT GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has received a strategic investment from GrandBridge Corporation, a municipally owned investment holding company, in a private placement announced July 8, 2026. GrandBridge joins VCT Group's existing group of shareholders as a new backer.

What does VCT do? Based in Kitchener, Ontario, the company builds commercial solar, EV charging, and operations and maintenance (O&M) solutions, with more than 300 projects across North America. Its flagship product is the proprietary Heliostation solar carport system, engineered for climates with rain, ice, and snow.

What's the money for? The investment will fund VCT Group's growth through product development and remote monitoring systems. President Brian Unrau and the existing leadership team remain in place to guide expansion.

Why now? GrandBridge frames the deal around rising electricity demand. "As electricity demand continues to rise, driven by electrification and growth in our communities, distributed solar represents a practical and cost-effective option for adding new generation quickly," said Sarah Hughes, GrandBridge's president and chief executive officer.

Who's GrandBridge? The company holds 100% ownership in GrandBridge Energy, GrandBridge Group, and GrandBridge Solutions. GrandBridge Energy delivers electricity to 116,000 customers in Brantford, Cambridge, North Dumfries, and Brant County.

The signal: A regional utility investor buying into a solar and EV charging platform reflects how distributed energy is moving from the margins to core grid strategy. As electrification strains local systems, utilities are increasingly treating on-site generation as a fast, practical way to add capacity.
