Backbone wins CHF 400,000 FIF Growth grant from Canton of Geneva

What's the deal? Two Geneva ventures — Backbone and Crìa Technologies — have won a combined $502,000 in grants from the FIF, the Canton of Geneva's innovation financing programme.

Backbone took CHF 400,000 in FIF Growth funding for its AI marketing platform for real estate professionals. Crìa Technologies received CHF 100,000 in FIF Seed Tech funding for its cold chain technology.

Backbone's platform helps property teams produce premium visual content in minutes, drawing on proprietary data and a network of on-site photographers. It is already established in the DACH market.

Crìa, led by three engineers and a physicist from CERNDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, has built the world's first portable device that operates from +8°C to -196°C for transporting fragile biological materials.

Why now? Backbone will use the funding to hire in Geneva and capture what it calls the current market window for AI marketing tools.

Crìa will fund its market launch and targeted R&D hiring. The startup has already been a winner or finalist in four 2026 competitions, including the De Vigier Award and MassChallengeDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

What could go wrong? Both grants are modest by venture standards, and each company faces crowded, demanding markets.

Backbone must defend ground against rival AI content tools. Crìa's hardware depends on a vacuum thermal insulation system — borrowed from particle accelerators like those at CERN — that now needs to scale commercially.

The signal: Both Backbone and Crìa Technologies remain early-stage ventures, and the FIF's tiered grants — capped at CHF 400,000 — are designed to bridge that earliest gap rather than replace venture capital. For CERN-rooted deep tech like Crìa's cold chain device, this kind of non-dilutive public funding is often the critical step between lab-proven technology and a commercial market launch.
