The UK startup, led by chief executive officer Dr Elizabeth Wheeler and Dr Shusei Kawara, targets the blood-brain barrier — which blocks roughly 99% of therapeutics from reaching the brain.
That barrier stops antibodies, cell therapies, large-molecule chemotherapies, and gene therapies from treating conditions such as glioblastoma, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and ALS.
Its core product, the "M Sorter", sorts a standard vial of microbubbles into uniform sizes in under three minutes. It does so without altering the chemical composition of the approved microbubbles.
The device slots into existing clinical workflows, requiring no changes to the microbubbles or ultrasound equipment.
Why now? Focused ultrasound combined with intravenous microbubbles is a clinically validated way to temporarily open the barrier at a precise target — and it is fast approaching the clinic.
"Focused ultrasound is fast approaching the clinic and we intend to be the standard for microbubble preparation when it does," said Wheeler.
The funding supports the company's route to market as it completes its research-grade product. It will then begin generating revenue from medical device companies, pharma, contract research organisations, and research institutions.
That revenue marks a critical first step before converting to a clinical-grade product.
What could go wrong? The path runs through research sales before any clinical-grade product, so commercial traction must arrive before the bigger medical opportunity opens.
The startup is also betting that the focused ultrasound wave reaches clinics on schedule — and that it becomes the default tool for microbubble preparation when it does.
The signal: By backing an early-stage company building tooling at the "enabling layer" of focused ultrasound, South East Angels is wagering on the infrastructure of an emerging clinical wave rather than the therapies it could one day deliver — a bet that pays off only if microbubble-assisted treatment reaches the clinic and Precision Microbubbles becomes the default preparation standard.
