DoorDash pays $300M for Wonder's campus dining unit, invests $125M more

What's the deal? DoorDash is acquiring Wonder's Grubhub Campus DiningDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → business — formerly Tapingo — for $300 million in the US, TechCrunch reports. It is also investing $125 million in Wonder's $650 million Series D round announced in July, bringing the two deals to a combined $425 million.

What each side gets: Grubhub Campus Dining already operates at 450 colleges and universities. DoorDash plans to expand the service to stadiums, hotels, and other venues.

Why now? Wonder, founded by e-commerce entrepreneur Marc Lore, runs a network of delivery-focused kitchens where customers can order dishes from several restaurants under one roof. It bought Grubhub for $650 million last year, and its portfolio also includes Blue Apron and Tastemade.

What's the endgame? Lore called the DoorDash partnership a chance to focus on the long-term goal: an autonomous system that can plan, prepare, and deliver personalised meals at scale. The deal lets Wonder shed a campus operation while keeping DoorDash as a backer.

The expansion: Wonder says it now has 157 locations, more than four times its footprint at the start of 2025. It plans to enter the Texas market in early 2027.

What it means for universities: DoorDash co-founder Tony Xu said adding Grubhub Campus Dining should expand "choice and convenience" for students, while simplifying operations for universities.

The signal: The transaction deepens DoorDash's push beyond restaurant delivery into institutional and venue dining, while giving Wonder capital and an exit from a business it acquired only last year. It underlines the continued consolidation of food-delivery assets among a shrinking set of larger platforms.
