Advans Nigeria raises N6 billion in debut commercial paper to boost SME financing
What's the deal? Advans La Fayette Microfinance Bank has raised N6 billion through its first commercial paper issuance in Nigeria.
The series one debt sale, part of a wider N20 billion programme, was oversubscribed and marks the bank's debut in the Nigerian capital market.
The funds will expand credit to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and broaden financial inclusion.
Why now? Nigerian MSMEs face persistent funding constraints despite driving employment and economic growth.
Chief executive officer Elvis Kwabena Oheneba called the transaction a strategic milestone that diversifies the bank's funding sources and adds liquidity for lending.
"It is a strong statement of confidence in our institution, our strategy, our governance framework and our long-term ambition to deepen financial inclusion," he said.
What could go wrong? Commercial paper is short-term debt, leaving the bank exposed to refinancing risk if investor appetite cools.
Oheneba said the bank would manage this through prudent risk management, operational efficiency, and responsible lending.
The signal: Advans Nigeria's oversubscribed N6 billion debut, drawn from a wider N20 billion programme, points to growing investor appetite for microfinance debt as lenders seek alternatives to deposit funding to close Nigeria's persistent MSME financing gap.
