The Portal raises $5M to launch Austin flagship

What's the deal? The PortalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a membership club built around wellness and community, has closed a $5M funding round to open a flagship location in downtown Austin. The 15,000-square-foot space at 601 Rio Grande is set to open in autumn 2026 and will feature a rooftop pool, cold plunges, a 30-person sauna, restaurant and bar, coworking space, podcast studio, and a rooftop stage.

The Portal first launched in Marin/San Francisco in 2024, positioning itself as a gathering place for founders, creatives, and technologists. Co-founder and chief executive officer Anwen Baumeister said Austin was chosen because it "has become a magnet for creators, entrepreneurs, and innovators."

The round drew a long list of angel investors and cultural figures, including Tim Ferriss, Matt MullenwegDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and Ankush GeraDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. Advisors include Dr. Mark Hyman and Miki Agrawal.

Why now? Austin has cemented itself as a hub for tech talent and entrepreneurship, especially after waves of pandemic-era relocations from the Bay Area. The Portal is betting that demand for curated, in-person community spaces is rising as remote work leaves professionals hungry for connection.

Programming will include live music, salon discussions, keynote talks, movement classes, and member-led events. Members also get reciprocal access to more than 30 partner clubs worldwide.

What could go wrong? The premium members club market is crowded. Soho House, Zero BondDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and a wave of wellness-focused competitors are all fighting for the same affluent, community-seeking demographic. Sustaining membership numbers — and justifying dues — requires consistently delivering experiences that feel worth paying for.

A $5M raise is also modest for a build-out of this scale. Fitting a rooftop pool, sauna, restaurant, art gallery, and coworking space into 15,000 square feet of downtown Austin real estate will test both the budget and the design, which is being led by creative agency FanFareDealroom has a profile for this one. The signal: The Portal's backer list reads like a who's who of tech-world angel investors — Tim Ferriss operates as an investment fund, Matt Mullenweg invests via a corporate vehicle, and Ankush Gera backs companies as an angel — suggesting that this is less a traditional venture bet and more a personal conviction play by people who want the product to exist. For an early-growth company, assembling that kind of cap table on a $5M raise signals strong founder-network pull, but it also means The Portal will likely need institutional capital to fund subsequent locations beyond Austin.
