Trillium raises $13M to build world's first bio-based acrylonitrile plant
What's the deal? Trillium Renewable Chemicals, a Knoxville-based bio-based chemical manufacturer, has raised a $13M Series B round to fund the world's first demonstration plant for 100% bio-based acrylonitrile. The round was led by HS Hyosung Advanced Materials, with participation from Capricorn Partners.
The funding builds on a previous $10.6M Series A and a $2.5M award from the US Department of Energy. It will cover operation of the demonstration plant (dubbed "Project Falcon"), continued pilot-scale innovation, and advanced engineering design for the first commercial plant.
Construction of Project Falcon at INEOS Nitriles' Green Lake facility is already complete. Commissioning is scheduled for Q2 2026, with product shipments expected later this year.
Why now? Trillium says it has completed a multi-year pilot programme validating its glycerol-to-acrylonitrile technology. The demonstration plant represents the jump from lab-scale chemistry to industrial-scale manufacturing — the make-or-break moment for any deep-tech startup.

What could go wrong? Global acrylonitrile production exceeds 6 million metric tons annually, nearly all derived from fossil feedstocks. Trillium's bio-based alternative needs to match industrial performance standards at meaningful volumes — a hurdle that has tripped up many green chemistry ventures before. Scaling from demonstration to commercial production will require significantly more capital and new strategic partners.
The company also enters a market where incumbents have massive cost advantages from decades of optimised petrochemical processes.
The signal: Acrylonitrile is a key ingredient in carbon fibre, plastics, textiles, and synthetic rubber — materials that feed into aerospace, automotive, and specialty polymer markets. If Trillium can deliver a drop-in, plant-based replacement without requiring changes to downstream supply chains, it could unlock decarbonisation across multiple industries at once.
The involvement of HS Hyosung Advanced Materials, a major carbon fibre producer, as lead investor signals genuine industrial demand. This isn't just a climate bet — it's a supply chain diversification play in a world increasingly wary of fossil feedstock dependency.
