Rune raises $40M to turn wasted solar power into AI compute

What's the deal? Rune Energy has raised a $40 million Series A led by Spark Capital, alongside the launch of RELIC, a modular compute system that installs directly at solar sites. What's the endgame? RELIC — Renewable Energy Linked Intelligent Compute — taps electricity that solar plants generate but never sell. US solar plants waste up to 20% of their output, an estimated 50-plus terawatt hours a year, according to the company.

Why now? Demand for AI infrastructure is outpacing delivery, with new data centers waiting years for grid connections. Rune says RELIC installs in 60 minutes and can energize customers within six weeks of signing, versus years for traditional builds.

What's the tech? RELIC runs natively on DC, solar's native output, so it needs no grid connection, transformers, or utility approvals. Rune claims it cuts non-compute infrastructure costs by 85% — $620 million on a 100MW deployment — and uses no water.

Rune is also revealing a live installation at a 200MW solar facility in Texas, deployed with no site modifications or grid work. "Every solar plant is a latent data center," said co-founder and chief executive officer William Layden. "We built RELIC to close that gap with compute that's online in days."

Who's behind it? Layden previously ran a Cube Hydro division that powered bitcoin mining from unused hydro electricity and later evaluated SoftBank Energy's 1.7 GW solar portfolio. Co-founder and chief technology officer Varun Palivela is a chip architect whose work at NUVIA fed into QualcommDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s $1.4 billion acquisition of the company.

The signal: Rune's round sits in the 95th percentile of all US Series A energy deals on record — a marker of how sharply investors are betting on solving AI's power bottleneck. As grid queues stretch on, tapping stranded renewable output at the source is emerging as a faster path to new compute capacity.
