Acelen secures $1.5B to build major SAF biorefinery in Brazil

What's the deal? Abu Dhabi-backed energy company Acelen has locked in roughly $1.5 billion in financing to begin construction of a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel biorefinery in Bahia, Brazil. The project, backed by parent investor Mubadala Investment Company, will be a greenfield facility adjacent to the existing Mataripe Refinery. It will produce SAF and renewable diesel using vegetable oils, waste oils, tallow, and macauba feedstock cultivated in Brazil.

Why now? Global aviation decarbonisation mandates are tightening fast. Airlines, fuel suppliers, and governments are racing to secure low-carbon fuel supply chains, making export-oriented SAF assets increasingly valuable. The biorefinery is positioned to serve both European and North American markets.

The project also fits into Mubadala's broader ambition to turn Brazil into a global renewable fuels hub, with plans exceeding $13 billion in Brazilian biofuels and energy transition infrastructure over the next decade.

What could go wrong? Large greenfield biorefineries are complex, capital-intensive projects prone to construction delays and cost overruns. Feedstock supply chains — especially for newer crops like macauba — remain unproven at scale. And SAF markets, while growing, still depend heavily on regulatory mandates that could shift with political winds.

The signal: Acelen RenewablesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, classified as a breakout-stage company on Dealroom, is betting heavily on macauba as a differentiated feedstock — a crop native to Brazil with no competing large-scale industrial use. With Mubadala, one of the world's largest sovereign investment funds, channelling capital into biofuels infrastructure, this deal underscores how state-backed investors are moving beyond traditional oil and gas to secure positions in the emerging SAF supply chain before blending mandates in Europe and North America create a supply crunch.
