IOTrader raises $3.8M from Animoca and six others ahead of token launch
What's the deal? IOTrader, a decentralised trading protocol on BNB Smart Chain, has secured $3.8M in strategic investment from seven backers: Animoca Brands, ViaBTC CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Everwood CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, CANDAQ, WAGMI Ventures, Credit Scend, and Web3 Labs. The Singapore-based project bundles perpetual futures, prediction markets, custom event markets, and AI-assisted trading into a single on-chain wallet experience.
Animoca Brands and ViaBTC Capital — the investment arm of one of the longest-running Bitcoin mining operations — lead the group. The remaining investors span institutional finance, consumer web3, infrastructure, and gaming.
Why now? IOTrader has crossed $1B in cumulative trading volume and ranks inside the top 20 perpetual decentralised exchanges by activity. Its user base reaches tens of thousands of monthly traders, grown organically through partner campaigns rather than token incentives — because the IOI token hasn't launched yet.
On the regulatory front, IOTrader's smart contracts have completed a third-party security audit. The IOI token whitepaper has been notified to the Central Bank of Ireland under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, and the token carries an assigned Digital Token Identifier for institutional reference.
What could go wrong? The protocol operates in a space where regulatory frameworks are still being written. MiCA notification is a step toward compliance, but it is not the same as full approval, and rules could tighten. On-chain perpetual futures platforms also face fierce competition from both centralised exchanges and rival DEXs that are better capitalised or more established.
Pre-token-launch valuations remain speculative. The $3.8M round values a project whose native token doesn't yet trade publicly, making it difficult for outside observers to gauge whether the price investors paid reflects genuine fundamentals or hype.
The signal: Animoca Brands, classified by Dealroom as a corporate investor, has been one of the most prolific backers across web3 gaming and infrastructure — its presence here alongside dedicated investment funds such as ViaBTC Capital, Everwood Capital, and CANDAQ suggests that strategic crypto capital is increasingly clustering around DeFi protocols that can demonstrate live traction before a token generation event. IOTrader's early growth stage and $1B cumulative volume give it a usage profile that most pre-TGE projects lack, which may explain why seven investors committed simultaneously rather than spacing bets across sequential rounds.
