Chicago Atlantic lends $35M to vehicle barrier maker Meridian
What's the deal? Chicago Atlantic has provided a $35 million senior secured term loan to Meridian Rapid Defense Group, a US-based company that designs and rents mobile steel barrier systems engineered to stop vehicles from harming pedestrians in public spaces. Chicago Atlantic acted as sole arranger and lender.
Founded in 2005, Meridian's products are certified under the US Department of Homeland Security's SAFETY Act. It primarily serves government agencies, military organisations, transportation authorities, and event operators. Its barriers are 100% American-made.
Why now? Meridian is gearing up for a string of high-profile contracts. It has been awarded the FIFA World Cup deal covering all US event locations and is pursuing related opportunities, including FIFA fan festivals. The company is also preparing to support America's 250th anniversary celebrations.
In 2025, Meridian deployed more than 250,000 barriers globally. Over the past few years, it shifted from third-party distributors to a fully in-house national salesforce — a move the company says has improved sales execution and conversion rates.
The signal: The deal reflects growing demand for physical security infrastructure at public events and gathering spaces. Vehicle-ramming attacks in recent years have pushed governments and event organisers to invest in deployable perimeter protection, turning what was once a niche product into a fast-growing category.
For Chicago Atlantic — a private credit firm that has closed more than $3.8 billion in credit facilities since inception — the loan fits its strategy of lending to "esoteric industries" where demand for capital outpaces traditional supply. The firm has over 100 professionals across offices in Chicago, Miami, New York, and London.
"Meridian is dedicated to helping people enjoy life's experiences with confidence and peace of mind," said David Enright, partner and head of direct lending at Chicago Atlantic.
