DEG, FMO, and Proparco lend $300M to Guatemala's largest bank for green finance

What's the deal? Germany's DEG, alongside Dutch development financier FMO and France's Proparco, is providing US$194.1M loan to Banco Industrial, Guatemala's leading commercial bank. Each institution contributes $100M. The money will fund green loans to local businesses in renewable energy, sustainable construction, and clean transport.

The transaction is structured through the Friendship Facility, a joint financing framework of the three European development finance institutions (DFIs). FMO is coordinating the deal.

Why now? DEG is expanding its footprint in Central America and has been active in Latin America for over 60 years. In 2026 alone, it committed more than €800M to ventures across twelve Latin American countries. Banco Industrial, meanwhile, is sharpening its focus on sustainable financial products and aligning its environmental and social management system with IFC Performance Standards.

"We are strengthening access to credit for sustainable investments," said DEG managing director Monika Beck.

Banco Industrial chief executive Luis Lara Grojec said the partnership "reflects shared confidence in the country's potential and in the importance of sustainable development."

What could go wrong? Green lending in emerging markets carries familiar risks: currency volatility, borrower creditworthiness, and the challenge of verifying that funds actually reach qualifying green projects. Guatemala's business environment, while improving, still poses governance and regulatory hurdles that could slow deployment.

The signal: European DFIs are increasingly pooling capital to back green finance in developing economies — a model that spreads risk while channelling larger sums than any single institution could deploy alone. The deal reflects a broader trend: development finance moving beyond traditional aid toward structured commercial lending that ties sustainability criteria to private-sector growth.
