Ohio's Meeder acquires Utah's Moreton Asset Management and its $4.7B portfolio

What's the deal? Meeder Public FundsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Columbus, Ohio-based investment management firm, has acquired Moreton Asset Management, a Farmington, Utah-based investment adviser. Terms were not disclosed. The deal adds Moreton's roughly $4.71 billion in assets under management to Meeder's portfolio, which serves over 600 entities.

Moreton, founded in 2005, specialises in fixed-income and money market portfolio management for corporations, municipalities, nonprofits, credit unions, and insurance companies.

Meeder Investment Management, established in 1974, launched Meeder Public Funds in 1990 to manage operating and project funds for public institutions — states, counties, cities, schools, and special districts. It operates from offices in eight US cities, including Salt Lake City.

Why now? The deal reflects ongoing consolidation in the public funds management space, where scale and geographic reach matter. Moreton's institutional client base and fixed-income expertise complement Meeder's existing footprint in the western US.

"This partnership reflects a strong alignment in philosophy and a shared commitment to serving public entities and institutional clients," said Jason Williams of Moreton Asset Management.

What could go wrong? Integration risk is real whenever two investment firms merge client portfolios and teams. Moreton's clients — many of them municipalities and nonprofits — chose the firm for its personalised, discretionary approach. Maintaining that service quality under a larger parent will be the key test.

The signal: Meeder Public Funds, categorised by Dealroom as still in its early growth stage, is using acquisitions rather than organic expansion to rapidly scale its public-entity investment platform. The deal underscores how mid-sized, niche asset managers are pursuing inorganic growth to build national footprints — particularly in the fragmented public funds space, where trusted local relationships and fixed-income expertise carry outsized value.
