Hadron Energy lands strategic investment for nuclear microreactors

The two companies signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to evaluate deploying Hadron's Halo Micro-Modular Reactor across up to five Smartland projects. Smartland may also participate in future financing rounds.

At the centre of the deal is Hadron's Halo MMR — a 10 MWe light-water nuclear system designed to be fully factory-fabricated and truck-transportable. Unlike traditional nuclear plants, it can be installed at industrial and infrastructure sites that have never had access to nuclear generation, delivering continuous, carbon-free power independent of the grid.

Smartland is developing a pipeline of roughly 150 MWe per project, with 12 projects targeted for completion by 2035 — representing aggregate capacity demand of approximately 1.8 GWe.

Why now? Industrial and digital operators face rapid load growth, multi-year grid interconnection queues, and mounting pressure to secure firm, on-site power. Data centres, in particular, are driving enormous new electricity demand that the existing grid cannot serve fast enough. "Power-hungry industrial and digital infrastructure cannot wait for the grid to catch up," said Sam Gibson, founder and chief executive officer of Hadron Energy.

Hadron is also advancing toward a public listing through a business combination with GigCapital7 Corp., which trades on Nasdaq under the ticker GIG. The Form S-4 registration statement became effective on April 15, 2026, with a shareholder vote scheduled for May 7.

What could go wrong? The MOU is non-binding, and initial deployment is targeted for the early 2030s — subject to site-specific diligence, licensing, permitting, financing, and definitive agreements. No project sites have been publicly identified. Nuclear licensing timelines are notoriously unpredictable, and any regulatory delays could push deployment further out.

The financial terms of Smartland's investment were not disclosed, making it hard to gauge the depth of commitment behind the partnership.

The signal: Hadron Energy sits at the early growth stage of a nascent but fast-moving market, as hyperscalers and industrial operators scramble for behind-the-meter generation capacity that can bypass years-long grid interconnection queues. The partnership with Smartland — whose 1.8 GWe pipeline dwarfs Hadron's 10 MWe unit size — signals that demand-side pull, rather than technology push, is increasingly driving nuclear microreactor development timelines.
