tabb partners with Galana Energies on Kenya's first large-scale fuel credit line

What's the deal? Kenyan fintech tabbDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has partnered with Galana Energies to launch what it calls Kenya's first fuel credit line at scale. The facility lets fleet operators and logistics companies apply for a bank-issued revolving credit line through tabb's partner banks, then use it to buy fuel at any Galana service station across East Africa. Suppliers get paid at the point of sale; operators repay the bank over 30 to 90 days.

The facility is already live and processing transactions across all Galana stations in the region.

Why now? Rising fuel prices have squeezed working capital for transporters and fleet operators across Kenya. Fuelling a large fleet now costs significantly more than it did weeks ago — capital that gets locked up before any revenue is earned. The credit line is designed to bridge that gap, replacing the informal credit arrangements that have long propped up the sector.

"Suppliers will get paid on the day, businesses will get the fuel they need, and the informal credit arrangements that have held this sector back begin to give way to something that actually works," said Don Okoth, tabb's director of mobility.

What could go wrong? The model depends on fleet operators repaying bank-issued credit on time. In a sector historically reliant on informal financing, shifting to structured repayment cycles could prove difficult — especially if fuel prices keep climbing or freight demand softens. Any spike in defaults would strain tabb's banking relationships and could limit the facility's growth.

The signal: Embedded trade credit for essential operating expenses — fuel, in this case — is an emerging model across African markets where formal working capital products remain scarce for SMEs. By positioning itself as the infrastructure layer between banks and suppliers rather than lending off its own balance sheet, tabb is betting that asset-light credit orchestration can scale across multiple verticals, from fuel to pharmaceuticals, faster than traditional trade finance.
