Souco raises Series C extension to build Japan's "physical internet" for logistics
What's the deal? Tokyo-based logistics startup soucoDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has closed a Series C extension round from Sumisho Venture PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the corporate venture capital arm of trading giant Sumitomo Corporation. The funding amount was not disclosed. Founded in 2016, souco matches businesses that need warehouse space with operators that have spare capacity, and has expanded into broader supply chain and logistics hub solutions nationwide.
Why now? Japan's logistics sector faces mounting structural pressures: a chronic driver shortage, uneven warehouse utilisation, and tightening restrictions on long-distance transport. These issues have intensified since the country's so-called "2024 logistics problem," when new overtime caps for truck drivers took effect.
Souco has been building a network of small and mid-sized warehouses across Japan, enabling a hub-and-spoke model that replaces long-haul routes with shorter relay legs. The company says it is working toward a "physical internet" — a concept in which freight moves through shared, interconnected logistics nodes much like data packets move through the internet.
What could go wrong? Souco's model depends on onboarding enough warehouse operators to create genuine network density. Convincing fragmented, often traditional operators to share capacity remains a challenge. The company also competes with larger logistics players and real estate developers building their own digital platforms.
Without a disclosed funding figure, it is hard to judge whether souco has the capital to scale fast enough against well-resourced incumbents.
The signal: Sumitomo's Tokyo-based CVC arm, established in 2022 to back domestic startups after decades of investing globally across Silicon Valley, Hong Kong, Tel Aviv, and London, is channelling that cross-border playbook into Japan's own infrastructure gaps. For souco — still classified as an early-growth company on Dealroom — the strategic alignment with a trading house that spans commerce, finance, and real estate may prove more decisive than capital alone in building the warehouse network density its "physical internet" model demands.
