AkzoNobel Completes Strategic Acquisition of Grupo Orbis, Boosting Growth in Latin America
In April 2022, AkzoNobelDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the global leader in paints and coatings, took a significant step to deepen its footprint in Latin America by completing the acquisition of Grupo Orbis, a well-established Colombian company. This move marks a strategic milestone for AkzoNobel as it aims to expand its presence in emerging markets, particularly across the Andean region and Central America.
Grupo Orbis, with a consolidated revenue of around €360 million, operates in ten countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. The acquisition brings under AkzoNobel’s wing several notable brands, including Pintuco, Andercol, Poliquim, and Mundial. These brands cover a wide range of products — from decorative paints and coatings to adhesives and emulsions — supported by a dedicated global service center.
For AkzoNobel, the deal is much more than just expanding its portfolio. It aligns closely with the company’s “Grow & Deliver” strategy, focused on driving growth in dynamic markets. With Pintuco’s decorative paints comprising about 75% of the portfolio, the acquisition offers meaningful opportunities for regional synergies and accelerated growth.
The transaction itself was notable not only for its scale but also for its complexity. Following regulatory approvals and corporate restructuring, AkzoNobel acquired 100% of Grupo Orbis shares, a rare move in the Colombian market, where direct transfer of shares without a public offer is uncommon.
This acquisition reinforces AkzoNobel’s commitment to investing in Latin America’s growth potential, providing a platform to deliver enhanced products and services tailored to the region’s diverse markets. It’s a clear signal that the company sees the future of coatings and paints in emerging economies — and is positioning itself accordingly to meet that demand.
