Datasite Acquires Grata and Joins Forces in $500M-Backed Deal

On June 3, 2025, DatasiteDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → announced the acquisition of Grata, a leading private market intelligence company powered by artificial intelligence. This strategic move, supported by a $500 million investment commitment from private equity firm CapVest, aims to enhance Datasite’s technology and expand its offerings in the mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market.

The acquisition builds on Datasite’s transformation from its origins as Merrill Corporation, a traditional financial printing company serving Wall Street. In the early 2000s, as M&A processes still relied heavily on physical documents and in-person data rooms, Merrill identified an opportunity to digitize the most sensitive phase of deals: due diligence. In 2002, it launched DatasiteOne, a secure virtual data room platform that enabled bankers, lawyers, and corporations worldwide to exchange confidential documents more efficiently.

By 2020, DatasiteOne had eclipsed its parent company, prompting Merrill to rebrand as Datasite and fully embrace its identity as a SaaS platform specializing in M&A technology. With backing from CapVest, which acquired Merrill in 2020, Datasite expanded its capabilities to include advanced analytics and artificial intelligence. The platform grew beyond sell-side services to support buy-side transactions, restructuring, IPO preparation, and secure corporate document sharing, processing approximately 14,000 deals annually across more than 180 countries.

Founded in 2016, Grata brings to Datasite a native AI-powered platform with comprehensive data on over 12 million private companies. Its tools enable thousands of M&A professionals to quickly identify potential targets and accelerate deal origination. The combination of Datasite’s extensive transaction volume and client base with Grata’s advanced AI and rich datasets creates a unique, integrated solution for market intelligence.

With CapVest’s $500 million investment commitment, Datasite is poised to continue its growth through both organic development and strategic acquisitions. This acquisition reinforces Datasite’s ambition to be the operating system for dealmakers worldwide, delivering intelligent, secure, and efficient solutions in an increasingly dynamic M&A landscape.
