Datasite Acquires Grata and Joins Forces in $500M-Backed Deal

On June 3, 2025, Datasite announced it is acquiring Grata, a leading AI-powered private market intelligence platform, in a deal worth over $200 million. The move is backed by a $500 million growth commitment from its private equity owner CapVest, aimed at accelerating Datasite’s technology roadmap and expanding its footprint in the M&A market.

The deal is the latest chapter in Datasite’s transformation story. Originally known as Merrill Corporation, the company built its name in financial printing, serving Wall Street’s document-heavy deal processes. In the early 2000s, as bankers and lawyers still relied on physical data rooms, Merrill spotted the opportunity to digitize due diligence. In 2002 it launched DatasiteOne, a secure virtual data room that changed how confidential deal documents were exchanged.

By 2020, DatasiteOne had become the company’s core business, prompting Merrill to rebrand as Datasite. That same year, CapVest acquired the company and began investing heavily in analytics and AI. The results have been dramatic: annual transactions handled have grown from 10,000 in 2020 to roughly 55,000 today, headcount has nearly tripled to 2,000, and revenue and EBITDA have been climbing at around 20% a year. The average deal has also grown in complexity, with the amount of data processed per project rising 20–25% annually.

Founded in 2016 by Harvard classmates Andrew Bocskocsky and Nevin Raj, Grata adds a complementary capability: a native AI platform with intelligence on over 12 million private companies. Its tools help dealmakers—especially in the middle market—spot acquisition targets and roll-up opportunities in fragmented sectors like plumbing and HVAC.

The combined client list reads like a who’s who of global finance and industry, from KKR, Carlyle, and TA Associates to Deutsche Bank, Rothschild & Co., Microsoft, Coca-Cola, and Shell. And while announced M&A volumes have slowed amid market uncertainty, Datasite’s own data shows more deals are in the “ready” stage, hinting at pent-up activity in the face of a $4 trillion private equity exit backlog.

With Grata onboard and CapVest’s backing, Datasite is positioning itself as the operating system for dealmakers—a single platform where origination, intelligence, and execution meet.
