BuyWander raises $21M to auction off retail returns nationwide

What's the deal? BuyWander, an auction marketplace for returned and overstocked retail inventory, has raised $21 million in a Series A round led by Madrona Venture Group and Inspired Capital. Triple Impact Capital, Silence Ventures, Animal Capital, and angel investors also joined, bringing total funding to $28 million.

What's the endgame? Founded in 2023 by chief executive officer Jordan Allen and chief financial officer Brock Kowalchuk, BuyWander connects bargain shoppers with returned goods from retailers like Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Home Depot. Bidding starts at $1 in seven-day auctions, and customers pick up purchases from local fulfilment centres to skip shipping costs.

Why now? The raise follows BuyWander's move from Spokane to the Seattle area, where it now runs its hub out of a 52,000-square-foot warehouse in Kent. It operates eight fulfilment locations, including recent launches in Denver and Chicago, and employs 325 people.

The funds will accelerate national expansion, technology investment, and leadership hiring. In Seattle alone, the company plans four to five warehouses over the next few years.

The tech angle: AI now helps BuyWander process hundreds of thousands of items monthly, identifying products, pulling retail valuations, and generating listings with one click. "There's been a ceiling on this business historically because of the technology required," Allen said.

The signal: At $21 million, the round sits in the top 8% of all US Series A rounds in fashion, underscoring investor appetite for the circular economy. The model also tackles an environmental problem: retailers often dispose of returns because their systems can't re-process them locally.
