What's the endgame? Founded in 2007, Next Hydrogen designs and manufactures electrolyzers that use water and electricity to produce clean hydrogen. The grant funds R&D to improve efficiency, performance, and cost, with the innovations expected to reach its commercial platform in early 2027.
Why now? Electricity accounts for 60 to 70% of hydrogen production operating costs. The company expects the project to cut its electrolyzer modules' electricity consumption per kilogram of hydrogen by roughly 8%, while also lowering fabrication costs.
Next Hydrogen is targeting cell performance of 1.8 V/cell at 1.0 A/cm² by the first quarter of 2027 — matching the US Department of Energy's 2026 technical target for alkaline water electrolysis. Its ultimate goal is 1.7 V/cell at 1.2 A/cm² by September 2028.
