BabyDoge acquires LimeWire to relaunch file-sharing brand as creator-first Web3 hub

What's the deal? BabyDogeDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the crypto ecosystem best known for its dog-themed meme token, has acquired LimeWireDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the file-sharing brand that dominated the 2000s before a landmark copyright lawsuit shut it down. Terms were not disclosed. The deal, announced in September, hands control from co-founders Julian and Paul Zehetmayr to BabyDoge and new leadership.

Who's taking over? Abel Czupor now leads LimeWire under the BabyDoge banner. The Zehetmayr brothers had spent five years rebuilding LimeWire since its 2022 relaunch, growing it into a decentralised storage and AI-tools platform used by millions each month.

What's the endgame? The new owners want to rebuild LimeWire as what they call a "digital refuge for creators," centred on data ownership and creator control. Its native token, $LMWR, becomes the utility token for services including decentralised file storage and AI tools.

Why now? The timing nods to LimeWire's history: the brand turns 26 this year, three decades after John Perry Barlow's "Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace." BabyDoge argues the platform needs scale that only a large community can provide.

"Julian and Paul did something extraordinary — they built Web3 infrastructure that 8 million people use every month," Czupor said. "But to go further, LimeWire doesn't need a board of directors. It needs an army."

The pitch: Czupor framed the acquisition as a fix for a broken internet, arguing that tech giants scrape creators' work to train AI models and streaming platforms keep 90% of what musicians earn. He said the goal is a platform "where AI serves the creator, not the corporation."

What each side brings. BabyDoge, which once carried a market cap above $1 billion, counts a community of more than 3 million users and holds a Guinness World Record for the largest pet-food donation in 24 hours. LimeWire brings one of the internet's most recognisable brands and its decentralised object storage network. The current LimeWire has no affiliation with the original Lime Wire LLC.

The signal: A meme-token ecosystem buying a legacy file-sharing name shows how Web3 projects are reaching for recognisable consumer brands to expand beyond crypto-native audiences. Whether creator-ownership rhetoric translates into products people use — and whether a token-driven model can sustain them — remains the open question.
