OpenAI buys camera-AI startup Glass Imaging in $300M deal

What's the deal? OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, a startup developing AI-powered smartphone camera technology, in a deal valuing the company at more than $300 million, according to the Wall Street Journal.

What does Glass Imaging do? Founded in 2019 by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, the Los Altos, California company built GlassAI, a Neural ISP (image signal processing) system that uses AI to improve smartphone photos. Its software corrects lens aberrations, sensor imperfections, and low-light image quality to bring results closer to a DSLR camera.

Its technology has been deployed in Honor smartphones and demonstrated in real-time video enhancement.

The terms: The price marks a sharp increase from Glass Imaging's valuation of about $100 million in a funding round last year. The company had raised roughly $31.5 million total, including a $20 million Series A led by Insight Partners in May 2025 and a $9.3 million round led by GV in 2024.

Who wins? A $300 million-plus exit represents roughly a 10x return on total fundraising. Insight Partners and GV, which led the two most recent rounds, stand to gain on relatively recent bets.

Why now? The deal adds to a wave of acquisitions as OpenAI expands beyond its core AI models and prepares for an expected initial public offering next year. Recent purchases include hardware startup io for about $6.5 billion and Statsig for $1.1 billion.

What could go wrong? OpenAI has not disclosed how it plans to use Glass Imaging or its technology.

The signal: OpenAI is buying its way into hardware and imaging, signalling ambitions well beyond chatbots as it builds toward the physical devices where its models might run.
