Vienna Stock Exchange buys majority of North Data to expand beyond market data

What does North Data do? It aggregates and consolidates information on 100 million private companies across 26 European countries, drawing from more than 160 public sources, including registers and EU databases. Users span corporates, SMEs, agencies, public authorities, journalists, and private individuals.

What's the endgame? Wiener Börse wants to extend its data business beyond exchange market data and diversify its revenue. "Functioning markets need transparent and reliable information," said chief executive officer Christoph Boschan. "Together with North Data, we are extending this principle beyond the market data and strengthening access to company data across Europe."

What changes for users? North Data's offerings continue, including its Premium Services for dossiers, search, and watch lists, plus API-based Data Services. The company said its support of investigative journalism will be maintained and developed across all markets.

What did the founder say? "In Wiener Börse, we have found a long-term partner with whom we can further develop and strengthen our platform," said Frank Felix Debatin, founder and chief executive officer of North Data.

The signal: Exchanges increasingly treat data as a growth engine rather than a byproduct of trading. By moving into private company records, Wiener Börse — which operates the Vienna and Prague exchanges and provides IT services to markets in Budapest, Ljubljana, and Zagreb — is positioning itself as a broader information infrastructure provider for the region.
