Sphere raises pre-seed to license private data for AI

What's the deal? Sphere has closed a pre-seed round led by SpringcampDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, with participation from Lightside Capital and other angel investors. The startup runs a marketplace connecting rights holders with AI companies that need licensed, high-quality data.

Why now? The open web has already been scraped, and Sphere argues that further model improvements depend on premium data and intellectual property from the private sector. Demand for rights-cleared data, it says, "has never been higher."

What's the endgame? Sphere wants to industrialise data licensing — building infrastructure that lets both sides transact at scale. Its marketplace gives rights holders control over how content is priced, licensed, and distributed, while offering buyers a legal path to premium datasets.

Since launch, Sphere says it has onboarded over $10 million worth of datasets onto the platform. The new funding is meant to accelerate that growth.

The signal: As AI firms exhaust freely available web data, licensed content from the private sector is becoming a distinct market. Sphere is positioning itself as the infrastructure layer for that shift, setting terms for how data moves in the AI economy.
