MBN backs content maker Artist Studio with $3M in premium-priced deal
What's the deal? South Korean broadcaster MBNDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has invested 4bn KRW (roughly $3 million) in content producer Artist StudioDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → through a private placement, deepening ties between the two firms. Artist Studio approved the third-party share issue on September 11, naming Maeil Broadcasting Network (MBN) as the buyer.
Why the premium? Unlike typical discounted issues, the shares were priced at a 5% premium to the reference price. Artist Studio said the structure protects existing shareholders while signalling MBN's confidence in the company's growth.
What's the endgame? MBN already holds exchangeable bonds (EB) convertible into Artist Studio shares. If it exercises those rights, MBN would become the largest shareholder — positioning this raise as a step toward direct participation in the content business.
An Artist Studio representative said the placement reflects MBN's "conviction in the company's mid- to long-term growth and future content competitiveness" (translated from Korean), adding that the premium pricing showed regard for existing shareholder value.
The signal: Paying above market for a stake is unusual, and it points to a strategic bet rather than a financial one. As broadcasters chase content pipelines, MBN's move stakes out an operating partnership rather than a passive holding.
