The company plans to use the money to build 250 third-generation robots and begin design of a fourth-generation platform. In the field, as many as eight robots now work 16 hours a day with 99%-plus uptime. Maven expects to pass 100,000 hours of autonomous real-world operations by year end, and 1,000,000 hours by the end of 2027.
Its wheeled robots move at up to 10 mph and carry two arms that lift up to 30 kilograms.
What's the endgame? Maven is developing general-purpose AI robots for industrial settings, with hardware and software built together rather than as separate problems. Its first workflows — mixed-case palletizing and tote handling — represent an estimated $80 billion addressable market, and the company has begun expanding into material handling and assembly, a market it sizes in excess of $1 trillion.
The strategy is deliberately task-by-task: "We're grounded in solving one customer problem at a time," Derbas told TechCrunch. Data pipelines feed information from operating robots back into retraining and redeployment within minutes or hours. Maven also holds at least one patent, a filing for a wheeled self-balancing robot base.
What could go wrong? Hardware startups often raise large rounds on the promise of future technology, then stall at the prototype stage. Maven's live deployments suggest it has moved past that point, though it remains lean at an estimated 23 to 34 employees.
The field is crowded: Agility Robotics, perhaps the most similarly positioned rival, is going public this fall in a $2.5 billion SPAC deal — though Derbas argues its bipedal robots "make zero sense" for industrial work: "ROI is the name of the game."
The next workflows will require robotic manipulation capabilities that don't yet exist, and a task-by-task approach could yet be overtaken by a powerful general physical-AI model from the frontier labs. "We're not in the race for models," Derbas said, "we're in the race to solve industrial labor."
The signal: A nine-figure Series A for a barely two-year-old robotics firm signals continued investor appetite for general-purpose robots aimed at warehouses and factories — global robotics VC topped $18.8 billion in the first half of 2026.
It comes as US manufacturers report more than 480,000 unfilled jobs, a gap that could reach 2.1 million by 2030. Real-world deployments, not just prototypes, are becoming the bar for backing such capital.
