TRM Labs valuation doubles to $2B as crypto crime fighter scales AI
What's the deal? TRM Labs has raised a Series C extension that doubles its valuation to $2 billion, six months after the San Francisco startup hit a $1 billion valuation in a $70 million Series C. Chief executive officer Esteban Castano called the new sum "modest" and said it came entirely from existing backers.
What does the company do? Founded in 2018, TRM Labs helps law enforcement track crypto criminals. It carved out a niche early by tracing newer cryptocurrencies like Ethereum and Tron, competing with the likes of Chainalysis and Elliptic.
Why now? Investors doubled the valuation in response to a fast-growing AI business. Castano said the company now maps online crime broadly, not just blockchain activity — crime that is "being turbo-charged with the advent of AI."
What's the endgame? In November, TRM Labs will announce a new investigations platform designed to help investigators uncover AI-driven financial fraud, and to combat sextortion and child sexual abuse. Castano frames AI as "a second growth engine for our business, not a pivot," with the crypto business still growing.
The company expects to reach $100 million in annual recurring revenue in the coming weeks. Castano said TRM Labs wants the new valuation to act as a "bat signal" to draw talent.
The signal: The raise reflects how demand for crime-fighting tools is expanding from crypto tracing into AI-enabled fraud detection. Castano argues AI is dangerous because it removes two constraints — time and expertise — that once limited how much damage criminals could do.
