What does Ceramat do? The company develops indigenous biomaterials — including hydroxyapatite, beta-tricalcium phosphate, biphasic calcium phosphate, and bioactive glass — for orthopaedics, oral care, cosmetics, and industrial uses. Hydroxyapatite and beta-tricalcium phosphate closely resemble natural bone and are widely used in grafts and implants.
What's the endgame? Ceramat already makes bone grafts through conventional processes, but producing grafts matched to individual patient anatomy is harder. The funded project pairs indigenous calcium phosphate materials with two 3D-printing methods — Digital Light Processing and extrusion-based printing — to build complex, custom geometries for specific clinical needs.
Why now? A large share of advanced bone graft products sold in India is imported. The project aligns with the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat push for domestic manufacturing, aiming to cut dependence on imported bioceramic and orthobiological products and strengthen local supply chains.
What they said: "India's transition from being a technology consumer to a technology developer requires indigenous capabilities in specialised and high-value areas of healthcare," said Rajesh Kumar Pathak, secretary of the TDB. He added that TDB is "committed to supporting technologies that bring Indian innovation from development to commercial application."
The signal: The grant reflects a broader state-backed effort to move India up the medical-technology value chain, from importing high-end devices to producing personalised, digitally designed solutions with potential for global markets.
