The company is building Izar, a system that combines robotics, photonics, and artificial intelligence to automate spinal surgery.
What's the endgame? Izar aims to automate the procedure entirely, offering what the company calls "submillimetre" precision. By reducing human intervention, the system is designed to cut surgical risks while tailoring treatment to each patient.
Why now? The Spanish government said its backing — the largest of the three participants — reflects its "commitment to deploying advanced technologies and digitalisation in healthcare to expand its effectiveness" (translated from Spanish). Kutxa Fundazioa framed its support as part of its commitment to the region's industrial and technological development.
What will the money do? The capital secures Deneb Medical's headquarters in Donostia and will fund growth of its 22-strong workforce. A US multinational's stake in the company will help integrate Izar into global surgical platforms and open access to established commercial networks, the company said.
The signal: The round ranks in roughly the 36th percentile by size, a modest raise that nonetheless underlines investor appetite for automating high-stakes medical procedures. For Deneb Medical, it marks a step toward taking what it calls "a new paradigm in spinal surgery" international.
