Japan's ANRis raises $1.4M to build siRNA cancer drugs that spot single mutations

What's the endgame? ANRis is developing siRNA drugs, a modality that silences disease-linked genes using the cell's own RNA interference machinery. Its core technology, "SNPD-siRNA," is designed to distinguish a single-base difference between mutant and normal genes, then selectively suppress the disease-causing version.
Why now? Existing siRNA methods struggle to tell mutant genes apart from the wild-type genes needed for normal function. That precision gap has limited siRNA drugs against cancers and genetic diseases driven by single-nucleotide variants.
What's the money for? ANRis will target mutant KRAS — a gene altered in lung, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers — through drug candidate creation and non-clinical research. Funds will also go to delivery-system optimisation, research hiring, external partnerships, and intellectual property. The company holds foundational patents in both Japan and the US.
Founded in 2023, ANRis is built on research by Kumiko Ui-Tei, a specially appointed professor at Institute of Science Tokyo. "SNPD-siRNA is a technology for tackling diseases that have been difficult to target with siRNA drug discovery," chief executive officer Wataru Kawamura said (translated from Japanese), adding that the raise is "an important step."
The signal: At roughly $1.4 million, the round sits in the lower tier for venture deals — around the 20th percentile by amount. That is typical for a university-spinout biotech at the pre-clinical stage, where early capital funds validation rather than trials, and where academic backers like WUV and JST play an outsized role.
