GreatWater buys seven-shop Clutch Automotive, enters Houston market

Who's who? Grand Rapids-based GreatWater operates a growing chain of auto care shops. Clutch runs sites in Friendswood, Houston, Katy, Pearland, and Spring, Texas — former independent shops it acquired over the years.

What changes? Not much for customers: Clutch keeps its name, leadership, and shop teams. Founder Matthew Schwab stays on as an acquisition consultant to support GreatWater's growth in Houston.

Why keep the team? GreatWater said retaining Clutch's leadership is key to entering a new market "the right way." Clutch executive Andrew Boone joins as district manager for Houston, while Trent Barger becomes director of integration, onboarding the shops and scouting future deals in the region.

In their words: "GreatWater brings the support and resources to do that at a larger scale," Schwab said. "What set them apart was their investment in our team and their alignment with our culture."

The signal: The deal reflects steady consolidation in the fragmented auto-repair sector, where operators like GreatWater are rolling up independent shops to build regional scale. Houston gives GreatWater a foothold in one of the country's largest metros — and a base to buy more.
