Superluminal raises $60M Series B to take GPCR obesity drug to the clinic
What's the deal? Superluminal Medicines has closed an oversubscribed $60 million Series B, led by BVF PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. The Boston biotech uses AI, protein dynamics, and structural biology to target G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), a complex class of drug targets.

What's the money for? Proceeds will fund a Phase 1 trial in rare genetic forms of obesity and hypothalamic obesity, expected to begin by the end of 2026. The company will also advance additional pipeline programs and expand its GPCR-focused discovery platform.
Why now? The round marks Superluminal's shift from a discovery platform to a clinical-stage company. "This financing represents an important milestone in Superluminal's evolution as we transition from a discovery platform company to a clinical-stage biotechnology company," said chief executive officer Cony D'Cruz.
What's the endgame? The lead candidate is a selective, biased MC4R agonist. The MC4R pathway helps regulate appetite and energy, with relevance in rare conditions such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome and hypothalamic obesity. Superluminal says the drug may later apply to Prader-Willi syndrome and, combined with GLP-1 therapies, to the broader population.
How it works: The platform pairs Agentic Cryo-EM, which generates hundreds of empirical GPCR structures, with co-folding models, de novo small-molecule design, and predictive toxicology tools. In preclinical studies, the lead candidate showed high selectivity and a favourable safety profile. The signal: At $60 million, the round sits in the 83rd percentile for size among comparable financings — a strong showing that reflects investor appetite for AI-driven drug discovery aimed at the crowded but lucrative obesity market.
