Who's backing it? Columbia Capital, a communications and infrastructure investor founded in 1989, has backed more than 175 companies and manages about $9 billion in assets. What does MDC do? It operates eight data centers and nine border crossings across McAllen, Laredo, Eagle Pass, El Paso, Nogales, and San Diego, connecting more than 60 networks along the corridor. Its model centres on neutrality — carriers often prefer partners that do not compete with them.
Where's the expansion? The capital funds added capacity at US border sites, a previously announced interconnection hub in Querétaro, and cable landing hubs in Cancún and Veracruz. MDC was selected as the neutral landing partner for the MANTA submarine cable system at its Mexican landing sites.
Why now? Digital infrastructure demand is growing across the border and inside Mexico. Salazar framed the deal as a way to keep pace with customer demand while preserving MDC's neutral posture.
The signal: Columbia's backing pushes capital into cross-border interconnection, where submarine cable access and neutral routing increasingly shape how traffic moves between the two economies. Hendy said MDC's footprint sits at the intersection of the US and Mexican digital economies, with 15 years of customer trust behind it.
