Citrix acquires Numecent to modernise Windows app delivery
What's the deal? Citrix, a Cloud Software GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → company, has completed its acquisition of Numecent, the maker of Cloudpaging and Cloudpager, two products for packaging and managing Windows applications. The deal expands Citrix DaaS capabilities for cloud-based application delivery across physical and virtual Windows environments. Terms were not disclosed.
What does Numecent do? Cloudpaging is a patented technology that packages Windows applications into isolated containers and streams them to endpoints on demand, without traditional installation. Cloudpager is a cloud console that provisions, updates, rolls back, removes, and meters those applications across Windows endpoints.
Why now? The acquisition builds on an integration the two companies launched in April, which let administrators publish and manage Cloudpaging containers through Citrix workflows. Bringing the technology in-house makes it native to DaaS and physical desktop deployments.
What's the endgame? Citrix wants to cut the cost and complexity of traditional app packaging and image management. Separating applications from the desktop image can reduce the number of images IT maintains, shorten update cycles, and let legacy and modern applications run side by side.
What changes for customers? Citrix says users gain faster recovery after ransomware or site failures, since IT can rebuild a clean environment and repopulate applications from the cloud. Teams can also manage applications across virtual and physical Windows environments from one console and recall unused licences.
What they said: "Enterprise customers have told us for years that application management is one of the most painful parts of running a Windows environment," said Shawn Bass, senior vice president and general manager of Citrix DaaS. Numecent chief executive officer Arthur Hitomi added: "Joining Citrix accelerates everything we set out to do."
The signal: The deal reflects a broader push to decouple applications from the underlying operating system, moving delivery to the cloud. By extending beyond virtual desktops to physical endpoints, Citrix is betting that flexible, image-independent app management is where enterprise IT is heading.
