Sotas raises early VC from Rice Capital to build chemical marketplace

What's the deal? Sotas, a Tokyo startup building information infrastructure for the chemical industry, has raised early-stage funding from Rice CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → via a third-party allotment of new shares. The round was led by Rice Capital general partner Taro Fukuyama and announced in August 2026.

What's the endgame? Sotas is building Sotas Chem Mart, a marketplace that links product discovery, comparison, sample requests, and purchasing. The goal is to connect chemical manufacturers with the market and support market-driven business development.

Why now? Japan's chemical industry is shifting from commodity chemicals toward higher-value and functional products. That change increases the need to identify market demand and translate it into new products — the market-driven approach Sotas is targeting.

In the sector, a single product carries data on composition, hazards, physical properties, regulations, and Safety Data Sheets. That information is often scattered across formats, making it slow to find and verify.

What's the money for? Sotas will accelerate development of Sotas Chem Mart and a data platform linking it to two existing services: Sotas Chemical Research, which manages SDSs and regulatory data, and Sotas Database, which provides product- and grade-level data.

Part of the proceeds will fund marketing, including CHEMICAL X, a business conference for the chemical and materials industries that Sotas will host on November 9, 2026, at TODA HALL & CONFERENCE TOKYO. Sessions will cover AI, supply chain transformation, and business portfolio restructuring.

The comment: "We are very pleased to welcome Taro Fukuyama of Rice Capital as a new shareholder in Sotas," said chief executive officer Yuuki Yoshimoto.

The signal: The raise reflects growing investor interest in software that structures industrial data. As Japan's chemical makers move up the value chain, tools that connect fragmented product information to buyers could become core infrastructure for the sector.
