Helix BioMedix raises $2M to advance rare skin disease therapy

What's the deal? Helix BioMedixDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a preclinical-stage biotechnology company based in Bothell, Washington, has completed a $2 million private placement. The company issued 100,000 shares of common stock to an accredited investor that already holds over 50% of its outstanding securities.

Why now? The financing, closed on August 25, 2026, strengthens the company's balance sheet and funds its lead program for Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP), an ultra-rare genetic disease. Proceeds will support preclinical development, regulatory planning, and milestones to position the XP program for clinical advancement.

What's the endgame? Helix BioMedix is developing a first-in-class therapeutic to repair UV-induced DNA damage in the skin of XP patients. Its polypeptide DNA Damage Response enzyme targets the repair pathways that prevent cancerous mutations.

The need is stark: individuals with XP are 10,000 times more likely to develop non-melanoma skin cancer and up to 2,000 times more likely to develop melanoma than those without the condition. Current management relies on strict UV avoidance and intensive cancer surveillance.

The deal carries investor-friendly terms. The backer holds a one-time discount right to buy securities in the next qualified financing at 80% of the lowest per-share price, plus weighted-average anti-dilution protection if a down-round occurs within 36 months. Both rights expire within 36 months of closing.

What they said: "This financing represents an important milestone for Helix BioMedix as we continue advancing our proprietary DNA repair technology toward the clinic," said Robin L. Carmichael, chief executive officer. She added that the backing "reflects growing confidence in our scientific approach."

The signal: At $2 million, this is a modest raise — landing in roughly the bottom 14% by size among comparable rounds. For a preclinical company chasing an ultra-rare indication, insider capital on protective terms buys runway to reach the next value-defining milestone.
