Sparrow Quantum wins €300K EU grant as Denmark's sole quantum pick
What's the deal? Sparrow Quantum has secured a €300,000 grant from the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking's Quantum Grand Challenge. The Danish company is the only recipient from Denmark, one of 13 firms selected from 30 proposals.
What's the endgame? The four-month EU-SCALE project will map a path toward large-scale photonic quantum computers, building on Sparrow's deterministic photon technology. It addresses not just generating qubits but integrating photons into larger, functional systems.
What are they building? Sparrow will deliver a technical and financial roadmap, plus early evidence of a resource-efficient architecture compatible with existing European high-performance computing infrastructure.
"Being selected alongside Europe's leading quantum companies is a proud moment for the team," said Peter Lodahl, founder and chief quantum officer at Sparrow Quantum.
Why now? The grant is a first step. Success in Phase 2 could unlock venture debt financing from the European Investment Bank — a springboard for far larger investment beyond the initial €300,000.
The signal: The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking runs on a budget of at least €8.2 billion for 2021–2027, aiming to make Europe a leader in supercomputing and quantum technologies. Backing a select group of startups signals a bet on which European firms can turn quantum research into commercial systems.
