What does it do? Mundo builds datasets and evaluations that help AI labs train and measure models on real-world signals — tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures, timing, and social context. Much of that information never appears in a transcript or other structured data.
What's the endgame? The company is building the data layer for what it calls "perceptual intelligence": the ability for AI to understand real-world sensory experiences and interact naturally. Its work spans speech-to-speech interactions, fine-grained video understanding, and emerging modalities that lack established training methods.
Why now? AI models have grown remarkably capable at reasoning over structured information, but much of the world stays unstructured. Conversations overlap, cameras capture incomplete views, and people interrupt, hesitate, and communicate implicitly.
Who's behind it? Mundo was founded by Jason Liao, Naijide A., Garreth Lee, and Kenneth W. It went through Y Combinator's Winter 2025 batch, and its datasets and evaluations are already used by leading AI labs to develop multimodal systems.
What's the money for? The round will fund hiring across research, engineering, and operations as Mundo expands its team. "We're just getting started," the company said.
The signal: The bet is that AI progress won't come from better models alone, but from a feedback loop between better evaluations and better data. As foundation models move from internet-scale text toward audio, video, and new modalities, the datasets and benchmarks that shape them become their own frontier.
