What's the endgame? The Geldermalsen plant turns bananas rejected from fresh-produce supply chains into food-grade puree for manufacturers. Its output feeds products including ice cream, fruit pouches, juices, and bakery goods. The company says it has processed around 20 million bananas since production began in 2023.
Why now? The €1.2 million is an intermediate step, not the full financing package. Launched in June and closed after exceeding its target, the campaign precedes a planned institutional round of roughly €10 million that Sunt expects to complete towards the end of 2026.
Where the raw material comes from: Bananas bound for Europe are harvested green and shipped under temperature control to delay ripening. Containers get rejected when fruit ripens too early for wholesale and retail distribution, even when it remains suitable for processing. The Banana Factory diverts that material into puree rather than destruction or anaerobic digestion.
