KaliVir raises $14M Series A extension for cancer immunotherapy trial

What's the deal? KaliVir Immunotherapeutics, a Pittsburgh-based clinical-stage biotech, has closed a $14 million extension to its Series A financing. Why it matters: The extension brings KaliVir's total Series A haul to $25 million, giving it fresh runway to advance its lead cancer programme.

What's the endgame? KaliVir develops oncolytic immunotherapies — engineered viruses that replicate inside tumours and trigger immune responses. Proceeds will fund patient enrolment in its STEALTH-001 Phase 1/1b trial of VET3-TGI, testing the drug in patients with advanced solid tumours.

VET3-TGI is built on KaliVir's Vaccinia Enhanced Template platform and is designed to express IL-12 and a TGFβ inhibitor to reshape the tumour environment. The trial is evaluating it both alone and alongside atezolizumab, and continues through its dose escalation phase.

Who's steering? Woo Young Kim of Company K Partners, Kwang Ha Jung of SV Investment, and JP Hong of Plexus Partners have joined KaliVir's board.

"This financing reflects the confidence of both new and existing investors in the potential of our VET platform and the progress we have made advancing VET3-TGI in the clinic," said chief executive officer Helena Chaye.

The signal: The round shows continued investor appetite for oncolytic immunotherapy, a field betting that engineered viruses can succeed where standard checkpoint drugs fall short in hard-to-treat solid tumours.
