What does it do? Spun out of the University of Edinburgh from research led by Professor Robert Henderson, the fabless semiconductor company builds sensors based on single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) technology. Unlike conventional sensors that measure light intensity, SPAD sensors detect and precisely time individual photons — capturing information standard cameras miss.

The company pairs that technology with on-chip computation, processing data at the point where light is detected. This lets imaging systems analyse information in real time and cut the volume of data sent for external processing.

What's the money for? Singular Photonics will expand its engineering capacity, develop additional sensors, and speed new product launches in response to customer demand. It already sells two product families, Andarta and Sirona.

Who's steering it? Dipesh Patel, former chief technology officer of Arm, has joined the board of directors, bringing senior semiconductor experience as the company scales.
