What does Icentia do? It has developed CardioSTAT, a long-term ambulatory cardiac monitoring tool that speeds up detection of arrhythmias. The product pairs a single-use ECG recorder with AI-driven analysis to catch heart abnormalities early.
Why now? The financing lands as Icentia reaches "financial and operational self-sufficiency," according to BDC's Louise Langevin, on the back of commercial traction across several markets. Heart disease is becoming more prevalent, adding urgency to faster diagnosis.
What's the endgame? The capital will fund faster development, more operational capacity, and wider access to cardiac monitoring — in Canada and abroad.
Icentia also stands out for reconditioning and reusing components of its devices, which cuts their environmental footprint, said Alain Longpré, Fondaction's deputy head of impact and sustainable investments.
What they're saying: "This joint support ... will enable us to accelerate our growth, making our technology accessible to more patients around the world," said co-founder Pierre Paquet.
The signal: The deal reflects investor appetite for Canadian medtech that turns advanced technology into deployable clinical tools. For Fondaction — which manages more than $4.5B in net assets — and BDC, Icentia is a bet on a homegrown company scaling from local success to international reach.
