Aligned Bio raises $3.6M to bring nanowire molecule sensing to market
What's the deal? Lund-based Aligned Bio has raised $3.6 million (35 million SEK) in an early VC round led by Swedish family office LMK industriesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. What's the endgame? Aligned Bio has built a nanowire-based platform to detect individual molecules, with research originating from Lund University and Chalmers University of Technology. It is now shifting from technology development to commercialization, focused on Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and ultra-sensitive protein detection.
What can it do? The company says its technology achieves read lengths of more than 1,000 bases using industry-standard equipment and reagents. It also claims up to 200 times higher immunoassay sensitivity than conventional approaches, potentially at far lower cost.
Why now? The round is the largest in Aligned Bio's history since its 2019 founding, and it arrives as the company enters a commercial phase. Pete Corish joined as chief executive officer in June and will lead the expansion.
Over the next six to 12 months, Aligned Bio plans to engage partners in the sequencing and proteomics industries. A near-term priority is scaling manufacturing of its nanowire consumables to the volume and performance levels the life-sciences market demands.
What could go wrong? Moving from a research platform to a commercial product hinges on producing components consistently at scale. The platform is designed to integrate with existing lab equipment, letting customers upgrade established systems rather than replace them.
The signal: At $3.6 million, the round sits in the 27th percentile by size — modest, but notable for a deep-tech spinout. It reflects Sweden's life-sciences ecosystem turning academic research into commercial molecular-detection tools.
