SoFab Inks raises $6M seed for perovskite solar reliability

What's the endgame? The company replaces C60, a fullerene layer it calls the largest source of voltage loss and the point where fielded solar modules crack first. Its metal-oxide nanoparticles bond six to 10 times more strongly and run at 22.3% efficiency on 30-centimeter single-junction modules.

What's the money for? SoFab plans to triple its engineering team and move into high-velocity production, scaling from 1x to 100x for 1x2-meter commercial specs. Why now? Try Dealroom →. Perovskite enables utility-scale tandem solar, the segment behind most of the roughly 2,800 gigawatts installed worldwide.

The technology also reaches beyond silicon's limits. Perovskite films are about 100 times thinner and made at lower temperatures, opening solar to flexible, lightweight surfaces across vehicles, satellites, and connected devices.

What could go wrong? Reliability at scale has been perovskite's hardest problem, and SoFab still faces the jump from lab results to full 1x2-meter commercial modules. Chief executive officer Blake Martin frames the fullerene layer as the barrier, but proving durability at manufacturable scale remains unfinished.

The signal: The round ranks in the 95th percentile by size among all-time US nanotech seed deals, a sign of investor appetite for materials that unlock next-generation solar. As electrification and AI infrastructure pull more demand onto the grid, the bottleneck is shifting from cost to durability — and that is where the capital is flowing.
