Fundraise

Solar Foods secures €77.8M state grant, tops €100M as Factory 02 nears green light

What's the deal? Finnish food technology company Solar Foods has secured more than €100 million to fund its second production facility and general operations, according to half-year results. The centrepiece is a €77.8 million package from Business FinlandDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, split between a €39.6 million grant and a €38.1 million research and development loan.

Why now? Both tranches are tied to the company's approved IPCEI notification under the European Commission and are conditional on a final investment decision for the new plant. Solar Foods intends to make that decision during 2026.

What's the endgame? The planned Factory 02 in Selkäharju, Lappeenranta, has entered its final design phase. Solar Foods has appointed principal partners including German systems supplier GEADealroom has a profile for this one. Solar Foods makes Solein, a single-cell protein produced through gas fermentation using carbon dioxide and hydrogen rather than agricultural feedstocks. It has positioned the ingredient against whey protein, citing rising whey prices and supply constraints.

By the numbers: The company held €27 million in cash at the end of June, up from €12.7 million a year earlier, helped by a €25 million January share issue. But its operating loss widened to €6.8 million from €4.8 million, and revenue stayed minimal at €0.1 million. Solar Foods does not expect significant revenue before Factory 02 is operational.

What could go wrong? Regulatory clearance is still pending: the company is working on novel food approval in the EU and a no-questions letter from the US Food and Drug Administration. Its commercial pipeline centres on the US, where its first consumer product — a protein powder from sports nutrition brand Ambrosia CollectiveDealroom has a profile for this one. The signal: The €77.8 million grant ranks among the largest state-backed food funding rounds in Finland, underlining how public capital is anchoring capital-heavy fermentation ventures that remain years from meaningful revenue. As chief executive officer Rami Jokela put it, the half-year was about progress "towards the final investment decision on the construction of the Factory 02 production facility."
