Beta Bugs raises £800K seed to commercialise insect genetics
What's the deal? Beta BugsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Black Soldier Fly (BSF) genetics company, has raised £800,000 ($1 million) in a seed round from its existing investors. The funding will support milestones leading to first sales of its Hiper-Fly product in early 2027.
Why now? The round follows a busy 12 months. Independent trials in early 2026 showed Hiper-Fly outperforming industry benchmarks, and in August 2026 the company signed a memorandum of understanding with FreezeM to develop Hiper-Fly as a suspended neonate product for the European market.
What's the endgame? Beta Bugs is building improved BSF genetics for the insect farming sector, aiming to supply higher-performing strains at scale. Chair Christopher Richards said the investment "reflects investors' confidence in our vision, based on the progress made over the last 12 months."
The new hire: Alongside the raise, Beta Bugs confirmed Alan Tinch as chief executive officer. Tinch, previously a member of the company's Science Advisory Board, brings experience commercialising genetics in chickens, pigs, and salmon. "These funds will enable us to move to commercialisation of our outstanding genetics," he said.
The signal: At roughly the 27th percentile by amount, this is a modest seed round — but one backed entirely by existing investors betting on a path to first revenue. In the emerging BSF sector, where genetics could become a key input, early commercialisation moves like this mark the shift from research to market.
