Space Kinetic wins $50M Space Force grant to sling satellites into orbit
What's the deal? Space Kinetic has been awarded a $50M grant from the United States Space ForceDealroom has a profile for this one. What's the endgame? Whirlwind flings small, ruggedized microsatellites from a host spacecraft at high velocities without firing a thruster. The system provides most of the initial Delta-V electromechanically, sidestepping the rocket equation.
Why now? "Our specific thesis is that the third space age demands better maneuverability, scalability, and marginal economics," cofounder and chief executive officer Ryan Sullivan told Payload Space. The company has spent years working with government partners to confirm the physics before maturing the hardware.
What's the plan? By decoupling the payload from the space vehicle, Space Kinetic aims to shift the burden of maneuver to the host, minimising mass, cost, and complexity. The regime- and payload-agnostic Whirlwind targets dual-use missions including sensor payloads, science probes, rapid-response comms nodes, and debris characterisation.
